On June 21, 2025, at the American Corner, Kano State Library, AWIFCA convened a small but powerful gathering 40 participants, mostly women, brought together to have an honest conversation about women’s rights, resistance, and understanding.
The session focused on a simple but often misunderstood idea: women’s rights are not something to fight for they already exist and deserve recognition. Through open discussions, participants explored how these rights align with Islamic teachings, while also addressing the cultural and social barriers that often create resistance.
For many women in the room, the conversation was both eye-opening and validating. It created space to share experiences, ask questions, and better understand how to respond to skepticism without conflict. By the end of the session, there was a noticeable shift more confidence, more clarity, and a stronger sense of awareness.
Interestingly, the few male participants also left with a different perspective. Conversations around shared responsibility, respect, and collaborative parenting helped reshape how women’s rights are viewed not as opposition, but as a pathway to stronger families and communities.
Like many meaningful engagements, Participants had more questions, more curiosity, and a clear desire to keep learning. This highlighted the need for continuous engagement beyond physical meetings.
AWIFCA is now looking ahead building a virtual platform to sustain these conversations and encouraging participants to carry the message into their communities. From small gatherings to everyday interactions, the goal is simple: shift mindsets, one conversation at a time.
